About The
Orton-Gillingham Approach
The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach reading, writing, and spelling. It is an effective approach, especially for those with dyslexia. The focus of the lessons is always based on the individualized needs of the learner, and the introduction of new material is based on their readiness. Orton-Gillingham lessons continuously build upon mastery of prior content, working at the pace of the learner.

Kristen Haslebacher
Occupational Therapist and Orton-Gillingham Tutor
I completed my BS in occupational therapy in 1999 at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, graduating with honors. I always knew I wanted to work with children, so following graduation, I began my career in pediatrics. For 20+ years, I worked as an occupational therapist in various pediatric settings and received advanced training in various areas, including Handwriting Without Tears, Executive Function, DIR/Floortime, Therapeutic Listening, the Alert Program, Social Thinking, and strength-based treatment planning and modeling. In addition, I am a certified Interactive Metronome provider and completed the USC Sensory Integration Continuing Education Certification.
When my oldest daughter received a diagnosis of dyslexia before entering college, I became interested in learning everything I could about how to help her. My research led me to the Orton-Gillingham Approach and ultimately to shifting my career away from traditional pediatric occupational therapy and instead toward reading and writing intervention for learners with dyslexia and/or dysgraphia. I completed my Associate Training coursework in the Orton-Gillingham Approach in early 2023. I bring my expertise as an experienced OT to support reading, spelling, and handwriting instruction with children using individualized Orton-Gillingham lessons.
I am a member of the Orton-Gillingham Academy, certified at the Associate level. I am also a member of the International Dyslexia Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association.
In my free time, I enjoy playing with my dogs, being active outdoors, reading, watching PBS Masterpiece shows, baking macaron cookies, and spending time with family.
Tutoring Services
Westside Dyslexia Solutions is conveniently located in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon. At Westside Dyslexia Solutions, I provide individual, in-person reading, spelling, and handwriting tutoring using the Orton-Gillingham (OG) method. These sessions occur at least twice per week but can happen more frequently depending on the learner’s needs. I begin with an intake and initial assessment to determine what the learner already knows. From there, the OG method is implemented through carefully and individually constructed lessons for each learner and moves systematically at the learner’s pace.
